Hungary vignette 2026: prices, rules and how to order

Hungarian motorway crossing the Great Plain at sunset

The Hungarian vignette, called the e-matrica, costs 5,550 Ft for one day, 6,900 Ft for ten days, 11,170 Ft for a month and 61,760 Ft for the national year in category D1, which is roughly €15.23, €18.93, €30.65 and €169.46 in August 2026. Hungary also sells county vignettes at 7,190 Ft each, and for a fixed route they undercut the national annual permit by a wide margin.

How much does the Hungary vignette cost in 2026?

A category D1 car pays 5,550 Ft for a one-day Hungarian e-matrica, 6,900 Ft for ten days, 11,170 Ft for a month and 61,760 Ft for the national annual vignette. Those are the gross 2026 tariffs published by Nemzeti Útdíjfizetési Szolgáltató Zrt. (NÚSZ), the state operator behind nemzetiutdij.hu, raised by roughly 5 percent on 1 January 2026 under Hungary's inflation indexing. Hungary fixes its tariffs in forint, so the euro figure you pay drifts with the rate, near 364 forint to the euro in early August 2026.

County vignettes, the cheap option nobody explains

Hungary is the only country in this group that sells county vignettes, and for a repeating route the county option beats the national permit outright. A megyei vignette costs 7,190 Ft for one county for the whole year, so eight counties in a row still come in under the 61,760 Ft national annual price. Hungary issues 20 of them, covering the 19 counties plus Budapest, and each is valid inside its county up to the first junction past the county border.

County vignettes suit commuters and second-home owners who drive the same two or three counties all year. They rarely help a transit driver, because a run from the Austrian border to Romania crosses most of the country and the national annual permit wins on price and simplicity.

Hungarian vehicle categories: D1M, D1, D2 and U

Hungary charges by vehicle category rather than by weight alone, and the wrong category leaves the vignette invalid even though you paid. Category D1 covers passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes designed to carry no more than seven people, D1M is the reduced motorcycle rate, and D2 covers larger vehicles such as bigger minibuses and motorhomes at 7,890 Ft a day, 15,280 Ft a month and 87,650 Ft a year. Category U is the trailer vignette, bought in addition to the towing vehicle's permit when that vehicle sits in D2. Buses have left the Hungarian vignette system and pay through HU-GO, the distance toll that also covers goods vehicles above 3.5 tonnes.

When the Hungarian e-matrica is valid

The Hungarian daily vignette is valid on one named calendar day from 00:00 to 24:00, not for 24 hours from purchase, and that single rule causes more penalties among foreign drivers than anything else in the system. The ten-day vignette runs to 24:00 on the tenth day, the monthly to 24:00 on the matching date of the next month, and the 2026 national annual vignette covers 1 January 2026 through 31 January 2027 whenever it is bought.

The daily vignette dies at midnight. Cross into Hungary at 22:00 on a one-day e-matrica and you are unregistered by 00:30, with the cameras recording it. Buy two consecutive daily vignettes for an overnight crossing, or take the ten-day permit at 1,350 Ft more than a single day.

Which roads the Hungarian vignette covers

The Hungarian e-matrica is required on the M-numbered motorways and expressways, the network almost every transit and holiday route uses: the M1 from the Austrian border toward Budapest, the M7 to Lake Balaton and Croatia, the M5 toward Szeged, and the M3 running east toward Romania and Ukraine. Ordinary numbered main roads and urban streets carry no charge, so a parallel main road is a legal free alternative if you accept a slower drive through the villages.

What happens if you drive without one

Hungary does not issue a roadside fine for a missing e-matrica; NÚSZ raises a surcharge called a pótdíj and posts it to the registered keeper. The base surcharge is 27,790 Ft if it is settled within 60 days of the demand notice and 95,730 Ft afterwards, so ignoring the letter roughly triples the amount owed. Detection runs on fixed gantry cameras reading plates against the national register, not patrols, so the first tolled kilometre is usually the one that catches an unregistered car. Hungary does offer one genuine escape: buying the e-vignette within 60 minutes of joining the tolled network cancels the surcharge.

How to order a Hungarian vignette through Vignettera

Choose the duration and start date, enter the licence plate exactly as it appears on the vehicle, select the country of registration and the category, and pay. Our team registers the e-matrica in the Hungarian system, normally within 5 to 30 minutes during working hours, and emails a confirmation showing the plate, the category, the validity window and both the state tariff and our service fee.

You can equally buy directly from NÚSZ at nemzetiutdij.hu, at motorway service stations or from Hungarian fuel retailers, and pay the state tariff alone. Drivers use Vignettera when one trip needs Austrian, Slovenian and Hungarian permits at once and three national portals, each with its own language and validity quirk, is the part they would rather skip.

Hungary vignette FAQ

How much is the Hungary vignette for 10 days?

The 10-day Hungarian e-matrica costs 6,900 Ft for a category D1 car and 3,450 Ft for a motorcycle at the official 2026 NÚSZ tariff, roughly €18.93 and €9.47. It is the standard holiday choice, because it costs only 1,350 Ft more than a single day and removes any risk from the midnight cut-off on the daily vignette.

Is a county vignette cheaper than the national one?

A Hungarian county vignette costs 7,190 Ft per county for the year against 61,760 Ft for the national annual permit, so up to eight counties remain cheaper. Hungary offers 20 county vignettes, covering the 19 counties plus Budapest, and each covers the tolled motorway sections in that county up to the first junction past its border.

Does a daily Hungarian vignette cover 24 hours?

No. The Hungarian daily e-matrica runs from 00:00 to 24:00 on one named calendar day, so it expires at midnight rather than 24 hours after purchase. Drivers arriving late in the evening need either a second daily vignette for the following day or the 10-day permit, which is only marginally more expensive.

Do I need a separate Hungarian vignette for a trailer?

Category U is the Hungarian trailer vignette and it is bought in addition to the towing vehicle's permit when the towing vehicle falls into category D2. A normal car in category D1 towing a light trailer is treated within D1, so read the category description against your combination before ordering rather than assuming.

What is the pótdíj if I am caught without a vignette?

The Hungarian surcharge is 27,790 Ft when it is paid within 60 days of the demand notice and 95,730 Ft once that window closes. NÚSZ identifies unregistered vehicles through fixed camera gantries, and the only way out is buying the e-matrica within 60 minutes of entering the tolled network, which cancels the surcharge entirely.

Is the Hungarian annual vignette valid for twelve months?

No, the Hungarian annual e-matrica follows the calendar year, so the 2026 permit covers 1 January 2026 to 31 January 2027 whenever you buy it. Purchased in October it delivers four months of cover for the full 61,760 Ft, which is why the monthly vignette is usually better value late in the year.
