Romania rovinieta 2026: prices, rules and how to order

The Romanian rovinieta costs €3.50 for one day, €6.00 for ten days, €9.50 for 30 days, €15.00 for 60 days and €50.00 for twelve months for a car up to 3.5 tonnes. Unlike almost every other vignette in Europe, the rovinieta is required on Romania's national roads as well as its motorways, so there is no cheap way around it by leaving the A1.

How much does the Romanian rovinieta cost in 2026?
A car up to 3.5 tonnes, category A in the Romanian system, pays €3.50 for a one-day rovinieta, €6.00 for ten days, €9.50 for 30 days, €15.00 for 60 days and €50.00 for twelve months. Romanian law sets those tariffs in euro, and CNAIR, the national road company behind erovinieta.ro, charges them in lei at the National Bank of Romania rate on the day of purchase. In early August 2026 that put the one-day rovinieta near 18.35 lei and the annual near 262 lei, so the lei figure moves month to month while the euro figure stays fixed.
| Duration | Car, category A | Approx. RON | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | €3.50 | 18.35 lei | A single transit crossing |
| 10 days | €6.00 | 31.46 lei | Most holiday trips |
| 30 days | €9.50 | 49.82 lei | A longer stay |
| 60 days | €15.00 | 78.66 lei | Two months of touring |
| 12 months | €50.00 | 262.20 lei | Regular drivers and commuters |
Official CNAIR tariffs, checked August 2026. Lei amounts are indicative and follow the National Bank rate on the day of purchase. Romania sells no seven-day option, so the ten-day rovinieta is the shortest sensible holiday permit.
Which roads the Romanian rovinieta covers
The Romanian rovinieta is required on the national roads (DN) as well as the motorways (A), and that is the fact that surprises foreign drivers most. Elsewhere in Europe a vignette buys motorway access and the parallel main road is free; in Romania the DN1 through the Prahova valley, the DN7 along the Olt and the A1 to A4 motorways sit inside one permit, so no practical border-to-border route avoids the charge.
Romania excludes the smaller network entirely. County roads marked DJ, communal roads marked DC and streets inside a town or city need no permit, and driving purely inside Bucharest does not require a rovinieta either. Vehicles above 3.5 tonnes stay in the same rovinieta system on higher tariff categories instead of moving to a separate distance toll, another difference from Austria or Hungary.
The Danube bridge toll is separate
Romania bills the Danube crossing between Fetesti and Cernavoda separately from the rovinieta, and a valid rovinieta does not cover it. The crossing sits on the A2, the main route from Bucharest to Constanta and the Black Sea coast, and costs roughly 19 lei per passage for a car. Payment goes by SMS to 7577, online or at a petrol station, and the deadline is midnight on the day after you cross rather than before it. Cameras read plates at the bridge, and missing the deadline costs about 190 lei for a car, so pay it the same evening.
How the rovinieta works and when it starts
The Romanian rovinieta is fully electronic and plate-linked, so nothing is printed, posted or stuck to the windscreen. CNAIR stores the permit against the licence plate and the country of registration, and fixed ANPR gantries on national roads and motorways check every passing plate against that database. You choose the start date at purchase.
Check the plate character by character. The Romanian rovinieta is validated only against what you typed, so one wrong letter means the vehicle is unregistered even though the money was taken. Foreign-registered vehicles also need the correct country code, and Law 275/2024's option to settle the current day's rovinieta by midnight the following day applies to Romanian-registered vehicles, not to visiting cars.
What happens if you drive without one
Driving a Romanian national road or motorway without a valid rovinieta carries a fine of 500 to 1,000 lei for a car under Law 275/2024, halved to 250 lei if it is paid within 15 calendar days. Because CNAIR enforces through camera gantries rather than roadside checks, the notice usually arrives after the trip, and a hire car or a foreign plate does not make the vehicle invisible. Against a €3.50 daily tariff, the fine is roughly seventy times the cost of compliance.
A reform is pending, so watch the date
Romania has legislated a change that will reprice the rovinieta in lei and split the tariff into three tiers by Euro emission standard, under Law 226/2023, which transposes EU Directive 2022/362 and its polluter-pays principle. Parliament postponed the start twice, most recently on 10 June 2026, moving it to 1 October 2026 while interoperability testing continues. Until then the euro tariffs above apply to every car equally, whatever its emission class. Older vehicles face the largest increases when the tiers arrive, so check the tariff on the day you buy.
How to order a Romanian rovinieta through Vignettera
Choose the duration and start date, enter the licence plate exactly as it appears on the vehicle, add the country of registration, and pay. Our team registers the rovinieta with CNAIR, normally within 5 to 30 minutes during working hours, and emails a confirmation showing the plate, the validity window and both the official tariff and our service fee. Keep that email on your phone, because the rovinieta itself exists only as a database entry.
You can equally buy directly from CNAIR at erovinieta.ro, through the eRovinieta app, at a border crossing or at the first petrol station, and pay the state tariff alone. Drivers use Vignettera when one route needs Hungarian, Romanian and Bulgarian permits in the same week and three national portals in three languages is not how they want to spend the evening before departure.
Romania rovinieta FAQ
How much is the Romanian rovinieta for 10 days?
The 10-day rovinieta costs €6.00 for a car up to 3.5 tonnes at the official CNAIR tariff, charged in lei at the National Bank rate, which was near 31.46 lei in August 2026. Romania does not sell a seven-day permit, so the 10-day option is the shortest realistic choice for a holiday and costs only €2.50 more than a single day.
Do I need a rovinieta on ordinary Romanian roads?
Yes on national roads marked DN, no on county roads marked DJ, communal roads and streets inside a locality. This is what makes Romania different from most of Europe: the rovinieta is a road-use charge rather than a motorway pass, so leaving the A1 for the DN1 does not remove the obligation to hold one.
Does the rovinieta cover the Fetesti to Cernavoda bridge?
No. The Danube bridge on the A2 between Fetesti and Cernavoda is charged separately at about 19 lei per crossing for a car, payable by SMS to 7577, online or at a petrol station until midnight on the following day. Missing that deadline costs roughly 190 lei, and holding a valid rovinieta makes no difference to the bridge charge.
What is the fine for driving without a rovinieta?
A car faces 500 to 1,000 lei under Law 275/2024, reduced to 250 lei if the fine is paid within 15 calendar days. CNAIR detects unregistered plates with ANPR camera gantries across the national network, so notices usually arrive by post after the journey rather than being issued at the roadside.
Can I buy the rovinieta after I have driven?
Law 275/2024 allows the rovinieta for the current day to be paid up to midnight the following day, but that option is written for vehicles registered in Romania. A visiting foreign-registered car should buy before entering a national road or motorway, at the border, at the first petrol station or online in advance.
Will Romanian rovinieta prices change in 2026?
Romania has approved emission-tiered pricing in lei under Law 226/2023, with three bands running from Euro VI and electric vehicles up to Euro 0 to Euro III. Parliament pushed the start to 1 October 2026, so the euro tariffs of €3.50 to €50.00 remained in force through the summer. Verify the tariff on the day you buy.
