Slovakia vignette 2026: prices, rules and how to order

The Slovak vignette is a fully digital motorway permit that costs €8.10 for 1 day, €10.80 for 10 days, €17.10 for 30 days or €90.00 for 365 days for a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes. It covers the tolled sections of the D motorways and R expressways, and Slovakia has sold no adhesive stickers at all since 2016.

The Slovak e-vignette costs €8.10 for 1 day, €10.80 for 10 days, €17.10 for 30 days and €90.00 for 365 days for a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes. Národná diaľničná spoločnosť (NDS), the state motorway company that runs the official eznamka.sk shop, published the 2026 edition holding every tariff at its 2025 level, so no Slovak vignette price rose this year. Slovakia also prices by period rather than by calendar year, which means the 365-day vignette runs a full 365 days counted from the start date you pick, including that first day.

Slovakia sells no vignette stickers at all

Slovakia withdrew the adhesive vignette at the beginning of 2016 and has issued only the electronic e-známka since, so there is no sticker to buy at a Slovak petrol station and nothing to display on the windscreen. The Slovak vignette exists purely as a record in the NDS database, linked to your licence plate and your country of registration, and enforcement gantries read the plate and query that register as you drive.

Two consequences follow from that design. The plate must be typed exactly as it appears on the vehicle, because a single wrong character in the Slovak register leaves you as an unregistered vehicle, and the vignette cannot be moved to a second car later. Check the plate and the country code on the confirmation email as soon as it arrives, while the order can still be corrected.

Motorcyclists get the best deal in the region. The Slovak vignette obligation applies to two-track vehicles only, so single-track motorcycles use every Slovak motorway and expressway free of charge with no registration and no exemption paperwork. Trailers are the opposite case: when a car plus trailer combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes, NDS charges the trailer its own vignette at the same tariff as the towing vehicle.

When the Slovak e-vignette becomes valid

A Slovak e-vignette becomes valid on the start date you select, and Slovakia lets you push that date up to 60 days into the future from the moment of purchase. NDS widened that window from 13 days for the 2026 edition and also released the new edition a month earlier than usual, which makes Slovakia one of the easiest vignettes in Europe to buy well ahead of a trip.

Which roads the Slovakia vignette covers

The Slovak vignette is required on the tolled sections of the D motorways and R expressways, which is the network almost every transit route uses. That includes the D1 spine running east from Bratislava toward Trenčín, Žilina, Poprad and Košice, the D2 crossing the country from the Czech border at Kúty down to the Hungarian border below Bratislava, the D4 ring around the capital and the R1 toward Nitra and Banská Bystrica. Slovak first, second and third class roads carry no charge for cars at all, so a vignette-free route always exists, at the cost of a considerably slower drive on single carriageways.

The toll-free bypass sections

Slovakia removed the vignette obligation from a group of urban bypass sections on 1 August 2024, and those sections remain free in 2026. The exemption covers bypass stretches at Bratislava, including sections of the D1 and the D4, together with bypasses at Nitra, Žilina, Poprad, Prešov and Košice, and it exists so that local traffic is not forced onto city streets simply to avoid buying a motorway permit. The authoritative list is Appendix 1 of the toll decree, published by NDS on eznamka.sk, and it is worth checking because the exemptions are defined section by section rather than road by road.

The practical rule for a visitor is simple. Driving only a Bratislava bypass may genuinely need no vignette, but the moment your route continues onto the tolled D1 toward Trnava or the D2 toward Brno, the vignette obligation applies for that day, and the camera on the tolled section will not care that the previous ten kilometres were free.

What happens if you drive without one

Slovakia enforces the vignette with automatic camera checks and objective liability, which means the penalty notice goes to the registered operator of the vehicle rather than to whoever was driving. A camera-detected offence normally brings a penalty of €150, reduced to roughly €100 if it is paid within the short deadline printed on the notice, and objective liability limits the exposure to one penalty per vehicle per month rather than one per day. A police stop is handled differently and is settled on the spot at between €50 and €200, while a case pushed into full administrative proceedings can reach €500. Against a €10.80 ten-day permit, none of those outcomes is a risk worth taking.
