Is the Austrian vignette digital or a sticker?
Austria sells both, and the digital vignette is the practical choice for foreign drivers. The Digitale Vignette is registered against your licence plate, so there is nothing to stick on the windscreen and nothing to scrape off later; enforcement cameras simply read the plate and check the register. The adhesive sticker still exists and is sold at petrol stations, tobacconists and motoring clubs near the border.
The difference that matters is transferability. A sticker belongs to the windscreen it is glued to, while a digital vignette belongs to the plate you typed in, so it cannot be moved to a second car and a mistyped character leaves you unregistered. Check the plate on your confirmation email the moment it arrives.
When does the digital vignette become valid?
An Austrian digital vignette bought online normally becomes valid 18 days after purchase, because Austrian consumer law grants an 18-day right of withdrawal on distance sales. You can start it sooner only by expressly waiving that withdrawal right, which the official shop and resellers offer as a checkbox or an earlier start date.
This is the single most common mistake foreign drivers make. Buying a digital vignette from a motorway car park on the day you travel does not give you cover for that day unless the immediate-start option was taken. Order at least a day ahead, or choose the sticker at a petrol station if you are already at the border.
Which roads does the Austrian vignette cover?
The vignette covers the whole Austrian Autobahn (A) and Schnellstrasse (S) network, which is the road system most transit and holiday routes use, including the A1 Vienna to Salzburg, the A2 south to Graz and the A12 through the Inn valley. Ordinary federal, regional and city roads carry no charge at all, so a route that avoids motorways needs no vignette, at the price of a much slower drive.
Sections that need a separate toll
Six alpine crossings are excluded from the vignette and billed on their own, so a vignette alone is not enough if your route uses them. These are the Brenner Autobahn A13 toward Italy, the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels on the A10 toward Villach, the Arlberg tunnel on the S16, the Karawanken tunnel on the A11 toward Slovenia, and the Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels on the A9. Each is paid at its own barrier or through a separate digital section toll, and prices run from a few euros to about €12 per passage for a car.
What happens if you drive without one
Driving a tolled Austrian motorway without a valid vignette triggers a substitute toll (Ersatzmaut) of €120 for a car, which ASFINAG staff can collect on the spot. Declining to pay it turns the matter into administrative proceedings where the fine can reach €3,000. Because detection is camera-based rather than a random patrol stop, an unregistered plate is usually caught on the first tolled kilometre, which is why the €12.80 permit is not worth the risk.

Do I need a vignette for a caravan or trailer?
No, the Austrian vignette is charged on the towing vehicle only, so a car pulling a caravan needs one car vignette as long as the maximum permissible weight of the towing vehicle stays at or under 3.5 tonnes. Above 3.5 tonnes the vehicle leaves the vignette system and uses the GO-Box distance toll instead.
Can I change the plate on a digital vignette?
Only in narrow cases, such as a change of plate after a vehicle is re-registered, and it must be requested through ASFINAG with evidence. A digital vignette cannot be transferred to a different car, which is why the plate must be checked carefully before the order is submitted.
Is the annual vignette a calendar year?
The Austrian annual vignette runs from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year, so it is a 14-month window rather than twelve months from purchase. Buying it in July still means it expires on 31 January, which is why the 2-month vignette is often better value for a summer stay.
Does the vignette cover the Brenner pass?
No. The A13 Brenner Autobahn is a separately tolled section and is paid at its own barrier regardless of whether you hold a valid vignette. The same applies to the Tauern, Katschberg, Arlberg, Karawanken, Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels.
