Do you need a vignette for a rental car in Europe?

Yes. A rental car needs a vignette on the motorways of every vignette country exactly like your own car does, and the rental contract does not change that. What changes is who already paid for what. The car might be covered for the country you picked it up in and for nowhere else. Most people find this out at the first border, which is the wrong place to find it out.

The short answer: the vignette follows the road, not the owner
A rental car needs a valid vignette for every vignette country whose motorways you drive, because the charge is tied to the road and the licence plate, not to who owns the car. There is no hire-car exemption in Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania or Bulgaria. The Czech government portal is typical: its electronic vignette applies to Czech and foreign-registered vehicles alike, and since 1 February 2021 it exists only as an entry in a plate register.
So the real question is not "do I need one?" It is "which ones does this particular car already have?" Our map of which European countries need a vignette tells you how many borders you are dealing with.
What the rental desk usually covers, and what it doesn't
A rental company generally covers, at most, the vignette of the country where the car is registered, since its own fleet has to drive those motorways every day. Switzerland shows the logic clearly. The Swiss vignette is needed on any Swiss motorway, so a Zurich or Basel fleet car has every reason to carry one. That car is still bare the moment it rolls into Austria.
Don't assume. Ask one precise question at the counter: "Which countries is this car covered for, and is that a sticker or a digital vignette?" Then ask a second one, because it matters just as much: "Am I allowed to take it to the countries on my route?" Cross-border permission is a contract term, and some companies charge extra for it. Neither answer is on the key fob.

Rental car rules in the 8 vignette countries
All eight vignette countries now sell a digital vignette tied to the licence plate, and the table shows the one rule in each that matters most when the car is not yours. The Swiss figures come from the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), the Austrian ones from ASFINAG's help centre, and the Slovenian ones from DARS, all checked in September 2026. For prices in the other countries, the country pages have the current tariffs.
| Country | Format | What matters for a hire car |
|---|---|---|
| Austria | Digital (plate) or sticker | 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes work immediately; online 2-month and annual ones start on day 18 for consumers (ASFINAG) |
| Switzerland | E-vignette (plate) or sticker, annual only | CHF 40 in 2026, valid 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027; e-vignette valid immediately; a removed sticker is invalid (BAZG) |
| Czechia | Electronic only (plate) | Applies to foreign-registered cars too; no sticker exists (Czech government portal) |
| Slovakia | Electronic (plate) | Buy for the exact plate; see country page for durations |
| Slovenia | Electronic (plate) | Plate can be changed before a future start date; no correction once bought with immediate validity (DARS) |
| Hungary | Electronic (plate) | Buy for the exact plate; see country page for categories |
| Romania | Electronic (plate) | Buy for the exact plate; see country page for durations |
| Bulgaria | Electronic (plate) | Buy for the exact plate; see country page for durations |

When to buy: after you have the plate, before the border
The right moment to buy a vignette for a rental car is after you collect it and can read the plate, and before you reach the first tolled motorway. A digital vignette is the plate. Buy it for a guess and you have bought it for somebody else's car.
Two national quirks are worth knowing. Slovenia's DARS lets you change the registration number freely if you picked a later start date and the vignette is not valid yet, but it will not correct an e-vignette bought for immediate validity. Austria has the opposite trap. ASFINAG's help centre says the 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes can be used straight away, while a 2-month or annual vignette bought online as a consumer only starts on the 18th day, because of the 14-day right of withdrawal plus three days for postal delivery. For a one-week hire car, that makes the choice for you: take the 10-day. The Austria vignette page lists the current durations.

Airport pickups deserve a special mention. Some airports sit a few minutes from a motorway ramp, and you will be on a tolled road before you have found the demister. Order from the car park with the contract in your hand.
What happens if the rental company swaps your car
A swapped rental car almost always needs a new vignette, because the one you bought stays registered to the old plate. Switzerland's BAZG allows an e-vignette to move to a new plate only when the vehicle and the holder remain identical, which is meant for new number plates on the same car, not a different car. And a Swiss sticker peeled off one windscreen is invalid on the next.
Breakdowns and upgrades happen. When they do, ask the company to write the swap into the contract, keep both agreements, and re-check the new car against your route before driving off. It is a mildly annoying ten minutes. A camera does not care how annoying it was.
And if you skip it? The demand goes to the registered keeper, which is the rental company, and from there to your card. Our guide to what driving without a vignette costs has the 2026 amounts per country.
Sorting every vignette before the first border
The cleanest way to cover a rental car is to order every vignette on the route at once, as soon as the plate is in front of you. You can buy each one from its national operator at the state fee alone, one portal and one language at a time. Vignettera does the same job in one checkout for all eight countries: you type the plate once, pick your dates, see the official fee and our service fee itemised before paying, and the confirmations arrive by email. Order your official digital vignette for the hire car here. If part of the route runs through barrier-toll countries, vignettes versus toll roads covers that side of the bill.
Rental car vignette FAQ
Does a rental car in Europe come with a vignette?
A rental car usually carries a vignette only for the country it is registered in, if it carries one at all. A car hired in Switzerland needs the Swiss vignette to use any Swiss motorway, so the fleet car may well have it, but that says nothing about Austria, Slovenia or Czechia. Ask the desk which countries the car is covered for, and buy the rest yourself.
Can I buy a digital vignette before I know the rental car's plate?
Not safely, because every digital vignette is registered to a licence plate. Slovenia's operator DARS lets you change the plate freely if you chose a later start date and the vignette is not yet valid, but it cannot correct an e-vignette bought for immediate validity. The simplest route is to order once you have the keys and can read the plate off the car.
What happens to my vignette if the rental company swaps my car?
A swapped rental car normally needs a new vignette, since the old one stays attached to the old plate. Switzerland's customs office BAZG only allows an e-vignette to move to a new plate when the vehicle and holder stay the same, and a peeled-off Swiss sticker is invalid. Ask the rental company to note the swap and keep both contracts.
Who pays if I drive a rental car without a vignette?
You do, in the end. Enforcement cameras read the plate, the demand goes to the registered keeper, which is the rental company, and the company passes the cost on to the card you rented with, often with a handling charge of its own under the rental contract. The fines themselves are set by each country.
